IV Therapy

IV Therapy by The Vitamin Bar in Park City, UT

IV therapy

A treatment that injects fluid, medications, or vitamins directly into a patient’s veins is known as IV or intravenous therapy. IV therapy is administered either through an infusion, sometimes known as a drip, or an injection using a syringe. This therapy is a preferred method of treatment for many medical problems, as it is an efficient and effective means of delivering medications, vitamins, and fluids directly into the bloodstream.

A healthcare provider, typically a Registered nurse, administers IV therapy for a number of conditions.  These conditions include and are not limited to: cold and flu,  morning sickness, hangovers, dehydration, altitude sickness, chronic fatigue, jet lag, GI upset, etc. Medications and vitamins are injected during IV therapy, to improve symptoms including nausea, inflammation, fatigue, muscle soreness , and much more.  In our setting, our staff is able to individually customize each infusion to a clients specific needs and goals. IV therapy is a safe and effective means of treating a variety of medical issues, as quickly as possible.

What should I expect during IV therapy?

Typically, you will spend the entire therapy session sitting down in a comfortable position. A needle will be inserted directly into a vein after the nurse has cleaned the injection site. After the vein is accessed, the needle is replaced by a small tube or catheter that is flexible and comfortable.  The preferred site for IV insertion is the arm, typically below the elbow,  as it is easily accessible, and one of the least invasive sites.  In addition, compared to other entry points, the arm is a lower-risk location, and its proximity to the heart facilitates speedier delivery.

The IV infusion will then be hung with gravity, and the drip pace will be set by the nurse performing the procedure. Treatment typically takes 30-45 minutes once the infusion has begun. The nurse will assess the site throughout the procedure, and will assure that no adverse events have occurred. The nurse will likely position the arm in a straight position, to assure timely delivery while maintaining comfort. After insertion, the procedure should be fairly comfortable, painless, and the patient is able to easily distract themselves by watching TV, talking on the phone, or listening to music.

Hangover Treatment

If you overindulged on a night out, waking up the following day can seem like a daunting task. Symptoms including sensitivity to light, dry mouth, pounding headache, GI upset, and dehydration can all be quite bothersome and uncomfortable. A hangover can make it difficult to focus and can completely spoil your day. Rather than spending all day in bed or downing glasses of water and electrolytes, IV therapy is a safe and effective way to cure an unbearable hangover. An IV bag for a hangover contains fluids to rehydrate the body, vitamins to boost your vitality, and medications to lessen the uncomfortable symptoms of nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and headache.

Athletic and Endurance Recovery

Following a challenging workout, or extended periods of athletic performance, lactic acid builds up in the muscles causing soreness and fatigue. This exhausted aching feeling can interfere with endurance and performance. IV therapy following athletic performance, aids in muscle recovery, and eliminates soreness. This treatment also helps to restore energy levels, and helps the muscles to repair from within, all while rehydrating and restoring loss of volume with IV fluids.

Immune System Support

Although the immune system effectively protects the body from disease and infections, illness is still very common and likely. IV treatment can support and supplement your immune system whether you are concerned about getting sick — particularly during the cold and flu season — or you already have an illness. IV therapy allows the body’s natural defenses to become stronger, and supplements any deficiencies to improve immune function. This treatment is effective for fighting off common viruses, or shortening the duration of a bothersome cold or flu.

Relief of Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is a common and expected symptom of early pregnancy, but it can persist throughout pregnancy in it’s entirety. Nausea, dry heaving and vomiting can lead to dehydration and is a risk to both the mother and the developing fetus. Simple environmental stimuli such as smells, foods, temperatures, and motion can trigger these symptoms which can be debilitating and interfere with daily activity. Fluids are utilized to restore hydration which helps maintain adequate blood pressure and blood volume for fetal development, as well as maternal health. Powerful anti nausea medications can also be administered to decrease nausea and the potential for vomiting.

Relief from migraines and headaches

Migraines and headaches can be quite painful. Although the precise cause of these persistent and nagging headaches isn’t always known, there are often associated triggers. Some migraine triggers include stress, poor diet, changes in the environment, and medication side effects. Although we can identify our triggers and make an effort to avoid them, migraines and headaches can still catch us off guard. Anti nausea medication, anti inflammatory medications, and hydration are administered to alleviate migraine symptoms and provide relief. No need to spend the day in a dark room waiting for your symptoms to resolve on their own when you can receive IV therapy and get on with your day. A simple IV therapy session could quickly turn a migraine to relief.

Treatment of Altitude Sickness

Visitors are often caught off guard by our high elevation, and the sickness that can come with it, which can require medical attention in the ER. If left untreated, simple dehydration and inflammation from altitude sickness, and lack of oxygen, can easily turn into a medical emergency. Avoid the ER, and receive a treatment targeted to detoxify the blood stream, reduce inflammation, improve fatigue, and rehydrate. With quick attention, these symptoms can be easily addressed, so they no longer interfere with your ability to enjoy the high elevation terrain and activities.

Relief of nausea, vomiting, and food poisoning

Nausea and vomiting is a nasty cycle that leads to further dehydration and loss of electrolytes. Many spend their day and night battling the miserable symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Once dehydration has occurred, it is difficult to replenish fluid levels through oral intake as nausea and vomiting can interfere with your ability to retain fluids you drink. IV therapy can be used to restore loss of fluid, electrolytes, and essential vitamins. Powerful anti nausea medications can be administered into the IV to provide nearly instant relief.
